A WordPress Update Killed My Site

A WordPress Update Dilemma

So, a WordPress update kinda messed with my website in ways that I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy, due to some or other conflict with my current theme. As a result, I lost all of my blog posts (fortunately there weren’t too many blog posts to begin with), as well as numerous pages, and other settings. In short, my site went boom!

The term ‘critical failure’ was thrown around by the pros, the people who deal with fixing websites for a living. We tried uninstalling the new update to see if that would help. Nothing. We reconfigured what we could. Nada. We deleted and re-installed, hoping the back-up would save something, anything. Nope.

Yeah, I was pretty much screwed, which is such a typical me moment.

What to Do?

So, I did what all logical people do in situations such as these—I gave up on retrieving my lost data and decided to rebuild the website from scratch. It was a total schlep. I screamed at my innocent computer, I cried because I was so frustrated, and then I just accepted it all.

I admit, yes, initially I was incredibly angry about losing my website and all the hours I poured into it, but then I realized it was nobody’s fault but my own for neglecting it in the first place. I didn’t take care of it, and so it kind of stopped taking care of me. That’s how the world works, after all. So, I took a deep breath, calmed down, and did what I do best … I created. And I must say, I’m happy I chose that specific option. What’s more, it didn’t take me too long to get the website up and running again!

And although a WordPress update is the reason for my dilemma, I need to thank WordPress’ staff for trying to help me out with the issues I had, even if we didn’t succeed in getting things back to normal.

A Clean Slate

And with my clean slate, I’ve decided to make this a haven for all things Monique.

There are so many new and interesting things to see on the website now, from the brand new FAQ page (you’re welcome to submit your own questions via the comment section, if you feel so inclined), to the bonus materials I’m systematically adding to the site (explore the book pages to find out what’s new on there). I hope to, at some point, have an Event Page up, and will also be hosting some giveaways from time to time. Oh, and if any authors are interested in doing a little guest post, you’re most welcome. 🙂 Just give me a shout on Twitter @MoniqueSnyman and we’ll work something out.

There’s still a lot of work to be done, don’t get me wrong, but I’m pleased with how things are turning out.

In Conclusion

I realize now that it could have been worse … much worse. *le sigh* I’m very fortunate it wasn’t, though. Let’s hope I don’t screw up a good thing again, yeah? LOL

There’s no way to say where this journey will lead me. I don’t have a clue what type of posts I will be creating, apart from the usual bookish news and announcements (yet). But with this blank page I hope to create exciting and interesting content that will inspire you in some ways. Maybe you’ll even return every once in a while to check on what’s happening in my world. 🙂 Who knows? Either way, I’m grateful that you, my readers, are here.

Oh, yes, and if you come across something while you explore, you have any suggestions for me, or if you would like to see something specific on the site, don’t hesitate to let me know. I’ll see what I can do to incorporate it into the changes I’m making.
