This week on Friday Favorites, I decided to get into the Halloween mood by sharing my favorite slasher movies with all my Darklings. After all, there’s nothing quite like having to run for your life to get the blood flowing, right? So, without further ado, I give to you my favorite slasher movies—the ones that’ll get the adrenaline pumpin’ like nobody’s business. 🙂
Friday Favorite Slashers
Halloween
No slasher list will be complete without the Halloween franchise, and with good reason. Michael Myers is an institution. He’s one of those baddies who’s difficult to read—and almost impossible to escape from. And I love that supernatural-esque vibe he gives off, not to mention his determination. Say what you want, he does have some admirable qualities (that go-getter attitude is sought after in the job market, after all).
Now, just so we’re clear, I’m specifically talking about the original Halloween franchise. Rob Zombie’s rendition did nothing for me whatsoever (although I quite like some of his other movies).
Child’s Play
If you don’t know I love this franchise by now, you don’t know me at all. I adore Chucky (the original franchise, not this AI thing Hollywood recently tried out). There’s something about his wit and sarcasm and how he always seems to have so much fun whenever he gets stabby that speaks to me. In case anyone wanted to know which one of The Child’s Play movies I love the best, it’s The Bride of Chucky, which introduced Tiffany to the franchise …
A Nightmare on Elm Street
Who would have ever thought that sleep could become a serial killer’s playground? Freddy Krueger is an effective boogeyman, one who may be the sole cause of my bouts of insomnia. Still, A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise is one of those slashers that’s aged incredibly well over the years and is somehow still as entertaining for young and old today. It’s also super binge-worthy.
Candyman
Candyman is a bit heavier than the previous ones on my list, mostly because of the subtle underlining handling of big issues like racism. Still, it’s a great flick, with excellent performances, and a wonderful urban legend at its core. Another pro for this horror film is the exquisite visual effects—the bee scenes are excellent, and then there’s the burning … Oh yeah, this is definitely one of my favorite flicks.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Leatherface has a special place in my heart for reasons I can’t quite explain. Maybe it’s the chainsaw that gets the adrenaline flowing. Who knows. The first time I watched The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, I was barely in my teens, and I loved every minute of it. And I hate to admit it, but I also very much enjoyed The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation starring Renée Zellweger and Matthew McConaughey. So, yes, this is definitely a slasher you should watch if you want to see some gore.
Psycho
Psycho probably graces every slasher list, but it’s with good reason. Alfred Hitchcock was a genius director who knew exactly how to create suspense and there’s something magical about the way he told the story. Though, I admit I haven’t watched Psycho as often (some may say religiously) as the previous entries on my list, but it remains one of my favorite slashers.
And that’s it for this week’s Friday Favorites. Some honorable mentions include Friday the 13th, My Bloody Valentine, Maniac, Scream, and an array of others that I really can’t fit into one post. Actually, Paste Magazine has a more comprehensive list if you’re in the mood to get your slasher-lovin’ on this Halloween season.
What are some of your favorite slashers?
Check you on the flip side, Darklings!

P.S. If you’re a young adult, maybe just get your parents’ permission before you watch some of these movies.
