It’s time for this week’s What’s New Wednesday! Whoohoo! Are you ready for some fun new recommendations? Want to see all my new obsessions? Well, keep on reading, because boy oh boy, do I have a line-up planned for this week!
What’s New Wednesday!
Okay, so there’s no specific theme this week on What’s New Wednesday. I just thought I’d give ya’ll a little sneak peek of what my week will look like, in between all the writing and editing. Fair warning: I DO NOT have a very exciting life at the moment. The highlight of my month is when I went to get my nails done, so … yeah. At least, thanks to me being a writer and a bit of an introvert, I know how to keep myself entertained. That’s the one thing that’s kept me sane in 2020. Hopefully, if you’re still isolating, this post will help you find something to do.
Books
I’m currently only reading one book at the moment, or rather rereading it: Fever by Deon Meyer. I seem to have gotten into a bit of a post-apocalyptic/dystopian theme with my current reads, so it only makes sense to add a bit of South African flavor into the mix. Now, for everyone who doesn’t know Deon Meyer, you’re in for a treat. Yes, it’s a translated book (Fever is translated from the Afrikaans Koors) and revolves around a father and son who’re trying to survive after a virus wiped out the majority of the world’s population. It’s an exceptional book and quite relevant. If you haven’t picked it up yet, now’s the time.
Music
First up is Meg Myers’ Take me to the Disco, which is just everything I want in an album. So much emotion, so much truth. Let me tell you, I can’t get enough of her music! And yes, I listen to some of her older albums, too. On loop. I still don’t regret it. 🙂
Then, Bishop Briggs’ new-ish album, Champion, is also playing on loop. While I seem to prefer listening to her older stuff on speaker, it seems this album is one of my go-to’s when I’m wearing headphones. Perhaps, it’s because the music feels too personal. I’m not sure. Either way, I’m loving her new sound!
Films
Anywho, so we’ve recently watched The Hunt, which I thought was freaking hilarious at times and quite thought-provocative as far as horror is concerned. Yes, there’s a lot of violence, but the film’s really good in my opinion. Well, for me it was a popcorn flick. Also, the movie is loosely based on a short story called “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, which is also hella good if you’re into classics.
8 recently got released on Netflix, and though some folks have been giving it bad reviews, I thought it was an excellent film with great acting and a gripping plot. Yes, it’s a South African horror films, and yes, I was actually scared. Why? Well, in South Africa we kind of believe in that stuff, whether we’re forthcoming about it or not. And while the rest of the world may think us superstitious … Ha! Keep thinking that. We don’t mind what you think, we ain’t dabbling either way. LOL! Open your mind and give it a watch, if you dare. 😉
Next on our watch list is another horror flick called, The Wretched, which I know nothing about. Husband picked it out for us. From the poster, the movie looks witchy and dark and totally like something I’m going to enjoy, so there’s that. I promised him I wouldn’t watch the trailer for some reason. We amuse easily, it seems. Anyway, so that’s what we’re watching tonight. I’m holding both thumbs for it to be a great flick.
That’s all I have for you for this week’s What’s New Wednesday. Just a taste, I know, but hey, at least I checked in.
In case you haven’t guessed my mood by now, it’s … *drum roll* … confused. I’m in the mood for this and that and the world doesn’t make sense, and it’s just all topsy-turvy, you know? I bet you do. That said, I think you can see my mood is mainly leaning toward the horror genre. 🙂
Hopefully, by next week, things will be a bit more decisive and themed. LOL!
Have a great week,
Monique
